the Supreme Court, part 2

When I posted my piece on the Supreme Court, I did not know how soon the President would be making another appointment. As the editorial cartoon above implies, a lot of people think that President Bush scored a homerun with John Roberts. Of course, it is too early to tell. Much is being said this week about his next nominee. On my blog dated September 28, I said:
I am still a little disappointed that we have not seen a "truly" conservative Christian on the bench. I would hope with the convictions that President Bush has displayed we might one day see a Baptist nominated to the court. Surely there has to be someone out there qualified. I realize that the nominee to replace Justice O'Conner will most likely be a female, and I have no problem with that. Deborah was one of the best judges in Israel's history as we can read in the Old Testament.

Now we have an "evangelical" Christian up for the next Supreme Court Justice appointment. Of course, she is not an independent Baptist, but she appears to be an "evangelical" Christian. Was President Bush listening to his conservative Christian base when he chose her as his next appointment? Just who is this lady?

I found some good info at wikepedia about Harriet Miers.

Personal life and religious beliefs

Miers is single and has no children. Two of her brothers and her mother live in Dallas, and a third brother lives in Houston. She also had a sister, Kitty, who is deceased.
Valley View Christian Church in Dallas was Miers's church from 1980 until she moved to Washington, D.C. to work for Bush. The church is evangelical. While being independent, Valley View is associated with the Restoration Movement Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. The church's teachings on salvation through Christ is consistent with orthodox evangelical theology, as is its statement of beliefs.
When pastor Ron Key was asked about Miers's views, he said, "her personal views are consistent with that of evangelical Christians… You can tell a lot about her from her decade of service in a conservative church." If Miers holds the same or similar beliefs of her former church, then she is likely to be an Evangelical Christian.

Miers is a former board member of Exodus Ministries, a Dallas-based "non-denominational Christian organization established to assist ex-offenders and their families become productive members of society by meeting both their spiritual and physical needs." It should not be confused with the "ex-gay" ministry Exodus International.
