150 years ago in American history

Did you know that the Tybee Island Lighthouse was burned during the Civil War?

As one who loves to read about American history, the next four years will be special. The "American Civil War" was called the "War between the States" in the South, and northerners called it the "War of the Rebellion." Other names for this turmoil included the "War for Southern Independence" and the "War of Northern Aggression".

Known today simply as the "Civil War" - the war began with shots fired at Fort Sumter in 1861. I will be starting a new sidebar on my blog with links to websites that will help bring the history to life. I used to teach American History to 8th graders and would spend about six weeks studying this time period. I still find it fascinating and really hard to understand how a brother could fight against a brother. But it did happen and I think we can learn from this period of our history and be determined that a "civil war" could never happen again in these United States.

1st site:
The Civil War in Georgia - the site has links to events, attractions, timeline, photo gallery, stories, and much more. Atlanta and much of Georgia were affected by the war greatly and there are many historical sites to visit.
