Timeline: February 1861, the CSA is formed


Did you know Sam Houston fought against joining the Confederacy?



South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in November of 1860. In February 1861, seven southern states met to form the Confederate States of America. Texas became the seventh state to secede on February 1, 1861 and was the last state to join the CSA before the war began in April of 1861. (Click to read "Texas marks 150th anniverary of secession) Before Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated, Jefferson Davis was chosen as the temporary president of the CSA. It would be a year later in 1862 before elections were held in the south and he would be elected president. (Click to read more about the CSA)
