Khedouri repeated the Elliot quote more than once for emphasis: “He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep, to gain that which he cannot lose.”
After he shared a quote from Jim Elliot, a Christian missionary in Ecuador, Khedouri explained why he would soon hand out $60,000 in cash in the chapel in individual envelopes with $100 bills inside — an envelope for every Wesleyan high school student, teacher and staff member. The idea and announcement was a surprise to the majority of faculty and students. Only a few top administrators knew of the plan before Thursday morning.
